Babson Park, Fla. - On Sunday morning (August 1st) over 125 competitors took part in the 3rd Annual Scenic 17 Triathlon hosted by Webber International University. With water temperature hovering in the upper 80's at race time and with muggy conditions from the gun, every competitor from the first timer to the grizzly veteran looked forward to the challenge that is, the Scenic 17 Triathlon. Participants tackled the ¼ mile swim, then proceeded to attack the challenging 15 mile bike along Scenic 17, and survive the 5k run along North Crooked Lake drive into the finish.
The men's champion, Clermont resident Kevin Grogan, led wire to wire taking home his second title; having won the inaugural event in 2008. The Gear for Multisport owner's time of 1:07:22 stands as the new course record. He bested second place finisher William Schutt of Sebastian by over three minutes (1:10:39), with third place going to Lakeland resident Tony Martino. The men's masters championship went to Thomas Brinegar of Valrico who finished with a time of 1:14:19, which was good enough for fifth place overall.
Dawn Decaminada of Brandon took top honors on the women's side, winning her first Scenic 17 individual championship. Decaminada's time of 1:16:43, eclipsed second place finisher Jennifer Vogel of Deluth, GA by nearly 4 minutes (1:20:20). Third overall went to Lake Wales resident Molly Hardman, the 2009 individual champion, in a time of 1:20:29. Kim Miller of Osprey, FL took home the female masters championship title.
“Today's race was the culmination of months of planning on several people's parts and to have the turnout that we had speaks volumes to everyone that has a hand in it,” said third year race director and assistant track coach Peter Ormsby said. “I had the opportunity to talk with several people post-event, with everyone enjoying the race and had nothing but praise for the course, the venue, and volunteers.”
Next year's event will include the addition of a youth race, ages 14 & Under, which will be contested prior to the adult race. Any individuals or businesses that would be interested in sponsorship opportunities for next year's races are encouraged to call (863) 638-2952 or email
