BABSON PARK, Fla. - The Webber men's soccer team had their annual banquet yesterday evening, which got a fantastic response from everyone in attendance.
After those in attendance enjoyed a fine dinner courtesy of the Webber cafeteria staff, Coach Cockburn got the evening underway.
Although the Warriors finished 5-9-1 overall, Cockburn praised the team's hard work and determination throughout the season, both on and off the field. The main highlight was beating (then) reigning Sun Conference Champions St. Thomas, 1-0. In terms of performance off the field, Academic All-Conference awards were earned by
Conor Dunne,
Jose Alarcon,
Javier Zorro Sandoval and Christopher Bates.
In order to give everyone an idea of how the season played out, Christopher Bates' annual highlight video was shown.
The video can be viewed at the following link:

Following the video, Coach Cockburn individually presented each senior with a framed shirt. He also had a few words to say about each player.
Ade Ellis – Portmore, Jamaica:
Having joined the Warriors in the spring of 2010, Cockburn spoke of Ade's versatility on the field. Not only did he play an important role in the Warriors' defense, but he also had a huge impact as a striker. Coach Cockburn has clear memories of Ade scoring on his debut against Southeastern, as well as scoring the equalizing goal against Warner earlier this year.
Javier De La Cruz – Segovia, Spain:
Javier joined the Warriors in the fall of 2011, and made an immediate impact by scoring on his debut against Cardinal Stritch. Without a doubt, his most impressive goal was this year, as he scored from 40 yards against St. Leo.
Julen Esteban – Pamplona, Spain:
Julen joined the Warriors in the fall of 2009 and will always be remembered for his passion and fighting spirit. The Spaniard scored his first goal for the Warriors this year against Johnson & Wales, while racking up many assists too.
Ali Gökhan Yazar – Istanbul, Turkey:
After successfully completing the ESL program at Webber, Ali joined the Warriors in the fall of 2009, although he was ineligible to play until 2010. Much like Julen, Ali's passion will never be forgotten, as well as his ability to play in several different positions. His most memorable moment – his back heel assist for Miguel Otero against Northwood.
Conor Dunne – Pensacola, Florida:
Conor joined the Warriors in the fall of 2009, scoring his first goal against Ave Maria in the spring of 2010. Not only did Conor captain the JV team this year, however, he also assisted
Gonzalo Ruiz twice in the game against Southeastern. Conor is also a three time NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
Once the seniors were given a round of applause, Coach Cockburn was ready to announce the winners of each individual award.
Coaches Award 2011 – Jose Alarcon:
Jose was given this award for always showing up on time, consistency completing his duties and helping raise money through team events. He never answers back and gives 110% both on and off the field.
Rookie of the Year 2011 – Matthew Brust:
Matthew had an outstanding freshman year. While he received Rookie of the Year, he was also presented with his plaque for making the Second Team All-Conference. He kept six clean sheets during the regular season and made several vital saves.
Most Improved 2011 – Julen Esteban:
Julen has shown a vast amount of improvement on the field this year. His presence in defense really helped the team's structure, while he also showed the leadership skills of a true veteran. His long balls proved crucial in many games.
MVP 2011 – Andy Hernandez:
Andy was very close to winning Player of the Year, but certainly deserved something for his efforts. He has shown so much progression since joining the Warriors last year, and his leadership qualities are second to none. Earlier this year, Andy broke the deadlock in Webber's 2-0 victory over Clearwater Christian.
Player of the Year 2011 – Javier De La Cruz:
Javier played a vital part in the Warriors' campaign this year. Aside from his sensational goal against St. Leo, he also scored against Clearwater Christian and Northwood. His natural ability to play soccer will be truly missed, and even harder to replace.
Outstanding Achievement – Christopher Bates
Christopher was given this award as a thank you for his three years service to the program. While he was primarily the cameraman and match reporter for the Warriors, he also played as a striker and goalkeeper on the JV team.
After the event, Coach Cockburn said: “While it's sad to see my seniors go, we must continue to move forward. I appreciate everything they've done and share a special bond with each of them, but now my job is to start building for next year. I wish them all the very best of luck in the future.”
