Babson Park, Fla. - On June 18th,Webber hosted its first of four beach volleyball tournaments of the season. The tournament showcased 18 very competitive teams from across the state for both male and female athletes. On the men's side, eight teams split into two pools of four with very stingy and competitive games throughout. The top three teams from each pool made it out of pool play and into the playoffs.
Female Winning team was: Holly Bates and Sophie Meyer out of the Orlando area
2nd place teams: Tiffany Maier from Webber & Natalie Arvizu a FL Southern Grad
Male Winning Team: Sergio Rios, Warner Head Coach and Jackson Benjumea from Orlando
2nd place team: Justin Friedman and Female Brittany Tiegs from the West Palm Beach area.
Reaching the championship game was a tough road for both finals teams; Sergio Rios/Jackson Benjumea and Justin Friedman/Brittany Tiegs. Prevailing in the end of the hard back and forth match was the team of Rios and Jackson.
On the women's side of the tournament, ten teams split into two pools of five which proved to be another competitive showing. Much like the men's side of the tournament, the ladies would match up against very high competition. All the teams will fight for one of the top three spots in their respective pools to make it out to the championship rounds. Making it out of pool play and fighting their way to the championship game for the women were the teams of Natalie Arvizu/Tiffany Malone (WIU) and Holly Bates/Sophie Meyer. In the championship game, both teams fought their hardest and the team of Bates/Meyer prevailed as the victors.
Coach Tim Edfors, Head coach from Webber likes to run beach tournaments to bring in potential recruits and to give his current athletes that live close to the school a place to play against upper-class competitive teams. All throughout the day, participants enjoyed the fun and beautiful atmosphere that the beach courts and lake provide. Congratulations to the winners and for the great competitive turnout.
