BABSON PARK, Fla. - Webber International University women's basketball won tonight in The Sun Conference Tournament by defeating Southeastern University 63-55. WIU entered the game as the 4th seeded team in conference standings while SEU was 5th in conference standings.
The game got of to a fast start as expecting behind good shooting from both teams. SEU went up early 8-2 but WIU made a run of their own to tie the game at 14. As the game progressed, both teams struggled to score heading into intermission.
The Lady Warriors trailed at the half 29-32. They shot a measly 29% in the first making just 4 for 14 from beyond the 3-point line.
WIU scored the first 6 points of the second half to go up 35-32 behind a break away layup by
Alishia Kahan. The score was tied 50-50 with 6 minutes remaining in regulation until
Japhnar Luzincourt broke the tie on a layup behind a finesse pass from
Alishia Kahan.
Yesenia Lora then took matters into her own hands by attacking the basket play after play. She scored a game high 21 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. WIU was able to connect from the free throw line late in the game that gave them cushion to close the game. The Lady Warriors closed the game on a 9-3 run in large favor to their rebounding effort and the ability to make free throws.
Alishia Kahan provided a huge offensive spark for the Lady Warriors scoring a career high 17 points shooting 4-11 from the field. She made 7 of her 8 free throw attempts for the game. She also added 5 assist and a career best 6 steals. Junior guard
Jasmine Singleton contributed with 8 points despite shooting 0 for 5 from the 3-point line. Senior guard
Erin Henry chipped in with 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assist and 2 steals.
The Lady Warriors advances to the semi-finals with the win. They will travel to Miami Gardens, Florida next for a match up against the number one seeded St. Thomas University.
