BABSON PARK, Fla. -- Third-seeded Webber International University Lady Warriors basketball team hosted No. 6 Florida Memorial Lady Lions, in the quarter-final round of the 2015 Sun Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, looking to reclaim the tournament title they won in 2013. The Lady Warriors took the win, 61-57.
The Lady Lions put the first points on the board. The Lady Warriors answered and soon the score was tied 3-3. The teams teetered back and forth a majority of the first half, tying the game several times (8-8, 10-10, 18-18). With 4:10 left in the first half, the Lady Warriors scored to tie the game again, 26-26. The two teams tied again, 28-28 at 3 minutes and again, 33-33 with 39 seconds left in the first. The Lady Warriors made a basket just in time to carry a 35-33 advantage into intermission.
Coming out of the locker rooms, the Lady Warriors broke away with a 43-36 in the first 5 minutes of play. With 7 minutes remaining, the Lady Warriors maintained their 7-point lead over the Lady Lions (49-42). With just under 5 minutes left in play, the Lady Warriors were up by 10 (54-44).
Leading the Lady Warriors on the court were:
Shakeria Wilson, with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals;
Deslyn Applewhaite, with 13 points and 6 rebounds;
Quanthavia Stalworth, with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks; and
Jurnee Pettigrew, with 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists, and 1 block.
Leading the Lady Lions on the court were: Nicole Collins, with 23 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block; Shelby Miller, with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 steal; and Diamond Colebrooke, with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
The Lady Warriors record improves to 21-6 overall and remains 13-5 in The Sun Conference.
Of the top eight conference teams, four winners of the quarterfinal games will travel to the highest-remaining seed for the final four with the semifinals taking place on Friday, Feb. 27 and the championship game slated for Saturday, Feb. 28.
